Puppy biting is completely normal β€” but it doesn't have to be your daily reality. Harold's calm method works for any puppy, at any age, in any household.

Why Do Puppies Bite?

Before we fix it, it helps to understand it. Puppy biting β€” also called mouthing or nipping β€” is how puppies explore the world, play with their littermates, and communicate. It's entirely instinctive. Your puppy isn't being aggressive. They genuinely don't know yet that human skin is different from a sibling's fur.

The problem is that most families respond in ways that accidentally make biting worse β€” pulling away sharply (which looks like play), shouting (which looks like excitement), or pushing the puppy away (which is still engagement). Every reaction teaches your puppy something. The trick is teaching them the right thing.

Puppy biting

Most puppies bite β€” it's what happens next that matters.

Harold's method is built around one core idea: remove the reward, redirect the behaviour, repeat consistently. It works whether your puppy is 8 weeks or 8 months old, and the whole family can do it β€” including the kids.

What NOT to Do

Don't tap or flick your puppy's nose. This startles rather than teaches, and can make a puppy hand-shy or reactive over time.

Don't hold their mouth shut. This creates fear and anxiety around hands β€” the opposite of what you want.

Don't shout "No!" repeatedly. Puppies process noise as excitement. Shouting often amps them up rather than calming them down.

Don't let children rough-play with the puppy. This is one of the most common causes of persistent biting. Rough play teaches puppies that teeth on skin is fine β€” and then everyone's confused when it hurts.

Child scared of puppy biting

Children are often the unintentional cause of persistent biting β€” not the puppy.

How Long Does It Take?

Most families see a clear reduction in biting within 5 to 10 days of consistent application. Puppies learn fast when the message is clear. If biting is still significant after two weeks, it's worth looking at the bigger picture β€” energy levels, sleep, enrichment, and whether the puppy is getting enough appropriate chewing outlets throughout the day.

The Bigger Picture

Stopping puppy biting is one piece of a larger puzzle. Puppies who bite a lot are often overtired, overstimulated, or under-stimulated. A calm daily rhythm β€” regular nap times, appropriate play, and mental enrichment β€” reduces biting dramatically even before you apply any specific technique.

Harold's full training approach addresses all of this together, which is why families who follow the complete method see faster and more lasting results.
